return to u.p. diliman
u.p. diliman is one of the big reasons why i am thrilled to be home again. i love the acacia trees lining up diliman’s academic oval. i enjoy circling around the symmetry of quezon hall (administration building) vis-à-vis gonzalez hall (main library), palma hall (social sciences and philosophy) vis-à-vis melchor hall (engineering), and benitez hall (education) vis-à-vis malcolm hall (law). despite the national government’s inability to provide adequate financial support for u.p., the university manages to produce achievers from every imaginable profession. some of these achievers were students from my general education, creative writing or comparative literature classes. i must have taught at least eight thousand students since 1988. provided with opportunities to encourage and nurture the country’s brightest students, i developed a sense of mission to remain in the academe. i can only hope that teachers, especially public school teachers all over the country, will be compensated well. from these primary and secondary school teachers, there will be a steadier flow of good students in the u.p. system for the years to come.

hi wendell.
loved the pictures.

this is a good trip down memory lane without the jet lag.

I was at Diliman over the weekend, jogging around the oval with my friend, Inquirer reporter Leila, also a UP grad, and we realized, wow, UP is on its centennial next year! Are there preparations for this? I wish they'd do a coffee table on "100 UP graduates who matter" or something. :)
karla!
there is a UP centennial and here's the website:
http://www.up.edu.ph/content.php?r=14&c=14
president emerlinda roman is a hands-on president and she's on top of the centennial festivities.
selecting the top 100 graduates can be controversial. UP has achievers in every possible discipline. but there are wonderful activities taking place for the next few months.
btw, great interview, the one you had with leo abaya.
stay cool.
w.
Sir wendell! Your photos remind me NEVER to take for granted the beauty of our beloved UP! I'm just in campus, i'll give you a ring one of these days! Glad to have you back in manila :)
