canberra and other exits

compared to manila, tokyo and cambridge, canberra tends to be really laid-back. but postgrads from a.n.u.'s research schools are expected to take on their academic assignments with persistency and greatness. contrary to perceptions back home, it's been tough living here as a student.

in manila, helpers do most of the household chores. there’s the ever-reliable family chauffeur to take me to work, meetings and errands. mom and dad would always be delighted to wake me up, take me out for lunch or dinner.
cousins who work as mom’s secretaries run across the metropolis to claim parcels, send documents and pay bills on my behalf. i don't usually get upset about anything because i keep myself preoccupied taking my nephews and nieces to cheap treats after school. most importantly, teaching in u.p. allows me to encourage many students and shape lives. my life back home is far more meaningful.

in canberra, on the other hand, things are hardly wonderful and exciting. i wash, dry and iron my own clothes at the dorm. i go to the palengke, do my own cooking and work on my expenses within a shoestring. i cannot afford frequent trips to coffee shops and fine dining establishments the way i do back home. there isn’t much time to watch movies either. there's no reason to paint the town red. canberra isn't much of a town, anyway. but there's phd-related work waiting to be done from 1 p.m. to 3 a.m. daily. focus remains in place even during weekends and holidays.
there are academic deadlines to beat and the pressure to pass and finish is always forthcoming.

coming from the philippines, one is frequently exposed to subtle racism in many parts of the world. most of the time, people will not talk about race or skin color. but there will be academics, students and people elsewhere who will make you feel that you are exotic and therefore, less-sophisticated. sometimes, paperwork necessary for certain academic, federal or legal requirements gets delayed vis-a-vis applications of white residents or those who come from wealthier countries. students from the third world are always under suspect. there’s always this running perception that asians, arabs, africans and pacific islanders are all going to stay here for good. there's also this certain look in the eyes of many locals that non-whites are out to take the most precious jobs away from the anglos.

i have been fortunate to move past these challenges most of the time. after all, i am certain about returning to u.p. immediately after my studies here. but i always have to be exceedingly diligent in my studies. there is no room for complacency in canberra. i have to prove myself worthy of privileges being given to me as a phd scholar all the time. i have accepted ages ago that these are perils arising from my not being australian or white.

because of my experiences living overseas, i could not possibly forgive our government for encouraging many of our compatriots to work perpetually as maids, entertainers and manual workers. there’s nothing wrong about these jobs per se. but the dependency on remittances from overseas have been detrimental to our psyche as a nation.

filipinos shouldn’t always be depending too much on foreign jobs. there has to be a way for philippine economic policies to genuinely trim down the widening gap between the rich and the poor. there has to be less greed and more commitment from our leaders. the more privileged ones should be compelled to follow suit.

it depresses me to see how filipino overseas workers have reconstituted landscapes in america, australia, europe, the middle east, and east/southeast asia. and the filipina nannies. how they laboriously shape fibers of children from other cultures and societies. in contrast, many familial relationships back home have fallen apart as a result of such expatriations.

meanwhile, the word pathetic can be attributed to those who suddenly turn anything but filipino. these are filipinos
who dissociate themselves completely from the country after nailing down strings of financial or professional success overseas. one can assume another nation's citizenship without relinquishing the fact that he/she was born/raised in the philippines. or the fact that one has philippine roots. nothing beats the nerve of these ingrates who have forgotten so easily that once upon a time they were all patay gutom like everybody else.

living in canberra has allowed me to think more about home and country. i have nothing against people who eventually decide to move overseas. but i hate it when people cut off their ties completely then reason out that there’s no hope and future for those who continue to stay in the philippines. filipinos shouldn’t go on believing that going abroad and being there for good is the only cool thing.

admittedly, we do have shameless government officials back home. but there isn’t anything shameful about preserving aspects of our roots and identity wherever we go.

coping with adhd

just before turning thirty, i gathered from experts that i have attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (adhd).

the discovery came at a most ill-fated time. i was at cambridge doing an mphil in social anthropology. i was undergoing medical treatment for i had been mugged by unidentified village thugs along garrett hostel lane bridge on the river cam. i nearly got thrown into a canal between trinity and clare college. there was resentment over japanese students, tourists and japanese-endowed structures sprawling across the city. surrounded frequently by former classmates and friends at tokyo university, my attackers thought that i was japanese.

there were four other asian-looking victims along the same route that night. three were critically injured and the fourth one was pronounced dead upon arrival at the new addenbrookes hospital. i was the only one who survived with less-damaging scratches on my face, arms and legs. back then, it did not seem relevant to problematize the complicated scheme of things. i was more concerned about getting my postgrad.

but during one of my subsequent medical sessions, i began complaining more about my clumsy motor skills. i had frequent street collisions around cambridge on a bike. i was subjected to a series of other tests. ultimately, adhd was uncovered.

learning disability experts are frequently amazed every time they hear about my affliction. theoretically, i should not possess the resilience of one who has chosen to dabble in teaching, speaking publicly, research and creative writing. many times, i have been construed as someone who is either weird or stupid.

when i entered the university of santo tomas elementary school at age 5, i could not make sense out of my teachers’ basic instructions. i was unable to sing and dance in unison with the other students. i failed to understand the concept of subtraction (as opposed to addition) as well as 0 (as opposed to 1 or more). as i moved from one academic level to another, it often surprised me how i passed succeeding quizzes, exercises and examinations. i could not initially understand many of the books i tried to read. during exams, however, answers turned up instinctively. they came successively as waves of inner whispers coming out of my head.

things got worse during physical education classes. i could not coordinate my limbs with my upper body. i was often laughed at. i failed to accurately execute basic drills in the monkey bars. i faltered in basketball, gymnastics, soccer, baseball, judo and arnis. i only excelled in running. i flashed occasional moments of brilliance in running-related street games such as patintero, agawan base and siyato.

every morning, i was also unable to tie my shoes the “ribbon knot” way. i struggled learning tricks just to be able to properly lace up. i began prevailing over such intricacies after primary school.

come recess time, i also had problems with spoons, forks and knives. quite often, food spilled a la jackson pollock on my school uniform every time i worked with utensils. consequently, i sought refuge in dimly-lit corners of the school canteen. away from my classmates’ prying eyes, i rapidly nibbled sandwiches, curly tops and cheese curls. i finally made good use of knives, spoons and forks without calling too much attention in time for my senior prom.

i think it was most discomforting to follow through class lectures and discussions. it also took me ages to acquire the facility to study more effectively. tragically, i could not understand more than half of what runs through every class hour. i felt sleepy during lectures, and jittery during quizzes and recitations. my knees, hands and jaws also trembled.

other parents and kids at primary school had frequently remarked that i was too “slow.” but teachers like milagros bautista-villarama, sylvia fernandez, teresita alon, oscar bautista, elizabeth duff-mendoza, januaria and george bareo, dolores lualhati and aida jurilla came to my rescue. painstakingly, they clarified threads i could not comprehend after each class. before midnight, my parents would re-read these school lessons until they perceive a certain mastery. i finally got to play around with school lessons after going through the same text at least three or four times.

i took up these growing up experiences with me so i can overwhelm greater challenges: friendships, relationships, screening exercises to universities, proficiency examinations in the foreign languages, work evaluations, dissertations and moving past discouragements.

i am still perpetually restless. i fiddle with my hands or feet. i remember unrelated pieces of trivia. i wiggle during lectures and meetings. i possess a compulsion to run, climb a tree, or get out of my seat in situations where sitting or quiet behavior is expected. i blurt out answers before comprehending entire questions. i find it hard to take turns or wait in lines. i remain socially inept because i could not follow transitions during conversations.

but i have gone this far. i can only be grateful to my parents, teachers and friends for my persistence, drive and discipline to overcome adhd.

Is it plain mischief or AD/HD? by Linda Bolido

UNDIAGNOSED, Attention Deficit- Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) may appear like a failure in parenting, an unwillingness and/or disability to enforce discipline on a headstrong, extremely mischievous, seemingly uncontrolled child.

And indeed, pediatrician Dr. Harland R. Gephart said, at a very early age, it would be difficult to separate simple, ordinary childish behavior from the manifestations of the more disturbing disorder.

Gephart, medical director of the Center for Attention Deficit Disorders at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound and pediatrics professor at the University of Washington in Washington, United States, was in Manila recently for the third National Conference on AD/HD.

“Symptoms of AD/HD are symptoms of all children. All kids can be fidgety or overactive or distractible… it’s a matter of degree…. If [a child is fidgety and distractible] at age 2 that’s normal but if (he/she is) that way at age 8, to a degree much more than (his/her) peers, that is abnormal.”

The AD/HD Society of the Philippines said, “Persons with AD/HD suffer from a condition characterized by age-inappropriate hyperactivity, impulsivity and/or poor attention span. Symptoms are often severe enough to cause impairments in academic and social functioning. In many cases, this leads to low self-esteem, very poor academic performance and serious behavioral problems.” It is estimated that 3-5 percent of the Philippine population aged 0-14 years have AD/HD.

Gephart cautioned about jumping to conclusions when children showed symptoms associated with AD/HD, pointing out that younger children might just be overactive and inattentive because of age. “At age 4-5, [the child] may not have reached the developmental stage [and] is unable to just sit still.”

Age for diagnosis

He said this was why there were problems about diagnosing the disorder when a child was 4-6 years old. Although there had been attempts to do so, he said no good criteria had been developed so far because there had been little research done at that stage.

Gephart added that one of the rules in the diagnosis of AD/HD was to get information from two sources that corroborated each other. For a 4-year-old child, only the parents would be able to provide sufficient information.

At age 6, when the child starts formal schooling, a teacher or teachers could add their observation to that of the parents. Standardized rating scales are used to establish if a child is behaving like most of his peers or is acting in a worrisome way.

The expert said, when parents brought to him children aged 4-6 on suspicion they could be suffering AD/HD, he would recommend behavioral modification and changes in parenting techniques. Some of the symptoms associated with AD/HD, primarily hyperactivity, disappeared as a child grew older.

He said majority of boys were found to have AD/HD in the early school years starting from kindergarten because they were found to be overactive and destructive, causing behavioral problem in the playground, for instance. In girls, the diagnosis was often made later—6th or 7th grade or even high school—because they were not overactive or destructive.

Though it might be a little difficult to spot AD/HD cases, the disorder cannot be ignored either because of its impact on behavior and academic performance. It is also important that AD/HD be diagnosed before adolescence when it becomes difficult again to identify the disorder.

Gephart said adolescents with AD/HD tended to drop out of school and fail to graduate, get into trouble with the law, and were more at risk of engaging in hazardous behavior—3-4 times more likely to use and abuse drugs, 3-4 times more likely to get involved in automobile accidents, among others. They tended to be impulsive and were more likely to be risk-takers and thrill-seekers.

These possibilities made it important, Gephart said, to provide expert care as soon as AD/HD was diagnosed even though it had been found that some people learned to cope with the disorder and managed quite well in adulthood.


The expert said, though the true cause of AD/HD was unknown, studies had shown there was a strong genetic factor involved. “If you diagnose AD/HD in a kid, 50 percent of the time the parents would recognize they had the problem” and “30 percent of the time another sibling would have it,” Gephart said.

Studies showed twins were likely to share the disorder, even those who had been separated and raised in different environments. “Whatever the cause [of AD/HD], the genetics is huge,” Gephart said.

Other factors that were found to contribute to a child’s developing AD/HD were mothers who drank or smoked, premature birth (the smaller the infant the higher the risk), certain kinds of head injury, and lead poisoning.

But what triggers the disorder to manifest itself several years after birth remains a mystery. The pediatrician said, “We don’t know whether it is environmental, an infection…”

Gephart said very specific guidelines were drawn up for pediatricians and psychologists for both diagnosis and treatment and medical professionals were trained in the use of these standards. For pediatricians, the training usually occurred during their residency. Gephart said AD/HD tool kits were developed that consisted of compilations of resources and questionnaires.

As for management, the expert said it was found AD/HD sufferers “did better in [a] structured environment” such as in caring, nurturing families that shared meals and did many things together. Even military service, with its rules and structures, seemed to help some people.


Interestingly, in terms of medication, though AD/HD involves hyperactivity, stimulants are among the drugs prescribed to ease the symptoms of the disorder, which is theorized to result from some brain cells’ inability to relate to each other properly.

Gephart said the drugs calmed down those people diagnosed with the disorder. The website ADHDbalance.net said, “It is believed that these drugs (stimulants) work by helping nerve cells in the brain better communicate with one another.”

One non-stimulant approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration is also prescribed.

auraeus solito and jeffrey jeturian

two friends are winning accolades worldwide as committed filmmakers.

"ang pagdadalaga ni maximo oliveros" (the blossoming of maximo oliveros), by auraeus solito (also known as kanakan balintagos, his aboriginal palawanon name) will have its australian premiere on 12 and 13 may at the sydney opera house during the 6th message sticks (australian indigenous film festival). no filipino film has ever been exhibited at the opera house. this is so unprecedented.

auraeus was my student in communication classes at the university of the philippines from 1989 to 1991. i have nothing to do with his success. but I can vouch for his integrity as a person and as an artist. his sister arlene was my seatmate in college. the solito siblings grew up near the slums of sampaloc (manila) where i was also born and raised. auraeus worked very hard to qualify as a student at the philippine science high school and the university of the philippines. he took up creative writing and theater in college.

prior to maximo, auraeus received acclaim for directing the music video of the eraserheads' "ang huling el bimbo." the video paired band members ely buendia, marcus adoro, raimund marasigan and buddy zabala (my student in humanities 1, 1990) with actress wena basco (another former student). the video bagged prizes at the n.u. 107 rock awards locally and the mtv international music awards at the radio city music hall in new york. i caught the music video for the first time on cable tv when i was studying at cambridge in 1996. tired and homesick, i cried buckets of tears being haunted by the video's replications of sampaloc under marcos and martial law.

by late 2005, robert redford's team had selected maximo to land in competition for this year’s sundance film festival (america’s most prestigious film festival). maximo's selection turns out to be a first for the philippines. the film has also received many best picture prizes and citations from berlin (germany), montreal (canada), rotterdam (netherlands), las palmas de gran canarias (spain), turin (italy), imagineNative (international film festival of indigenous films, toronto, ontario, canada), asian festival of 1st films (singapore) and cinemalaya (manila) film festivals.
maximo was also selected as the opening film at the 35th new directors/new films series, presented jointly by the film society of lincoln center and the museum of modern art's film and media department. maximo had its new york premiere at the walter reade theater in lincoln center and at the titus theater at MoMa.
most recently, maximo was exhibited at the bay area's kabuki theater during the 49th san francisco international film festival last 20 april to 4 may 2006.

meanwhile, jeffrey jeturian ’s recently-completed digital film "kubrador" (the bet collector) has been accepted in competition at the 2006 moscow international film festival.

"kubrador" revolves around “jueteng,” the game of numbers dating back to the country's spanish colonial period (1521-1898). to this day, jueteng lords and operators are sprawling all over the country. though illegal, jueteng affects the lives of individuals and institutions back home. former philippine president joseph estrada was thrown to face an impeachment trial allegedly because of his involvement with jueteng.

the last filipino films selected for competition at moscow were gil portes’ "saranggola" (the kite) in 1999 and "mga munting tinig" (small voices) in 2003. the kite, starring lester llansang and ricky davao, was scripted by the multi-awarded butch dalisay. small voices, featuring alessandra de rossi, was written by senedy que, adolf alix jr. and gil portes.

jeffrey took up broadcast communication at the college of mass communication, university of the philippines. immediately after college, he moved up the professional ladder, from being production assistant (e.g. marilou diaz-abaya's "alyas baby tsina" starring vilma santos), script supervisor (e.g. maning borlaza and leroy salvador’s "bituing walang ningning" starring sharon cuneta; eddie garcia's"saan nagtatago ang pag-ibig" starring vilma santos and "huwag mo itanong kung bakit" starring dina bonnevie; leroy salvador's "sa hirap o ginhawa" starring sharon cuneta), art director/production designer (e.g. chito rono’s "eskapo," "dahas" and "davao" tv series on rpn 9; national artist ishmael bernal’s "dear teacher" tv series on ibc 13; abs-cbn's "maala-ala mo kaya,"; gma 7's "gma telesine," "anna karenina" and "villa quintana"), assistant director and television director (e.g. "legal forum," "maala-ala mo kaya," "kirara," and "pira-pirasong pangarap") over a 15-year period before finally fulfilling his dream of becoming a full-fledged film director in 1998.

jeffrey’s debut film "enter love" (sana pag-ibig na,1998), is a moving narrative about a mistress and her deceased lover's son. shot on a measly budget of US$50,000, the film bombed at the box-office. however, “enter love” received glowing reviews from the local critics. it also received numerous citations and awards especially best actress prizes for 1950s superstar nida blanca. "enter love" turned out to be blanca's last great film role before she was murdered in 2001.

jeffrey’s 2nd film is arguably his most definitive. "fetch a pail of water" (pila balde,1999), a homage to national artist lino brocka, problematizes the plight of slum dwellers and their struggle for survival. the film was commercially and critically well-received. it won a netpac jury award at the 1st cinemanila international film festival in 1999 and a gold award at the 2000 worldfest international film festival in in houston, texas (u.s.a.). likewise, the manunuri ng pelikulang pilipino has selected fetch a pail of water as one of the 10 best philippine films for the 1990s.

jeffrey’s third film, "larger than life" (tuhog, 2000), satirizes the state of filmmaking in the philippines. the film also makes a powerful statement about the propensity of mainstream filmmakers to beautify and sanitize reality at the expense of truth and in the name of commerce. “larger than life” was selected in competition at the cinema of the present section of the 2001 venice international film festival.
in venezia, larger than life was shown alongside alfonso cuaron's "y tu mama tambien", antoine fuqua's "training day" (denzel washington's oscar-winning film with ethan hawke), clare peploe's "the triumph of love" (starring mira sorvino and ben kingsley), alejandro amenabar's "the others" (starring nicole kidman), the curse of the jade scorpion (starring, written and directed by woody allen), fruit chan's "hollywood hong kong", david mamet's "heist" (starring danny de vito and gene hackman), albert and allen hughes' "from hell" (starring johnny depp), milcho manchevski's "dust" (starring joseph fiennes and australia's david wenham), steven spielberg's "a.i., artificial intelligence" (starring haley joel osment, jude law and william hurt), jill sprecher's "13 conversation about one thing" (starring matthew mcconaughey) and mira nair's "monsoon wedding" (that year's golden lion winner for best picture). larger than life also received best picture awards from the 2001 star awards for the movies and the 2001 urian awards while garnering another gold award from the 2002 worldfest international film festival in houston, texas (u.s.a.).
i remember working on the lyrics of larger than life's incidental music (by south border's jay durias). jessica zafra did the other lyrics. afterwards, i helped around with the film's english subtitles. unfortunately, the subtitles in italian were hurriedly done by another filipino academic. at venice, they appeared notoriously medicore. fortunately, larger than life's strong visuals overwhelmed the awkward translations.
on the way to the venice red carpet, jeffrey gamely posed for the press from gondola to gondola. later, he sought the assistance of a regal-looking bystander to have his grand arrival photographs recorded for posterity. the "photographer" turned out to be the legendary jeanne moreau. though a bit shaken by his sudden discovery, jeffrey persisted a la margie moran: serene and unruffled.
jeffrey’s succeeding films have also received prizes and citations. these are: bridal shower (2004), one moment more (minsan pa, 2004) and bikini open (2005). jeffrey’s films have been selected for exhibition in festivals across sweden, france, switzerland, italy, slovak republic, czech republic, india, japan, korea, hong kong, bangladesh, singapore, thailand, colombia and the united states.

kubrador was completed only weeks ago. cineastes are already anticipating the arrival of the film with so much excitement and eagerness. kubrador's lead actress is the hugely talented gina pareno (previous remarkable performances: "magnificent bakya, " 1965, "let's dance the soul," 1967; mar s. torres' "dalawang mukha ng anghel," 1968; jun raquiza's "krimen: kayo ang humatol," 1974; maning borlaza's "bukas, luluhod ang mga tala,"1984; ishmael bernal's "working girls," 1984; and jeffrey's own "bridal shower," 2004). she is ably supported by thespians nanding josef (as father buboy), fonz besa (as eli) and maximo's soliman cruz ( as the policeman). jeffrey's production team is composed of joel jover (screenplay), armando lao (script supervision), boy yñiguez (direction of photography) and another good friend, leo abaya (production design). visual artist/television director/network executive johnny manahan turns in quite a performance by portraying a very special role: that of a jueteng master.

jay lozada now reports from manila that boy yniguez (director of photography for "larger than life" and "kubrador") has meticulously compiled highlights as well as behind-the-scenes from jeffrey's latest movie.

thinking filipinos should embrace alternative spaces offered by maximo and kubrador. in spite of processes that frequently undermine broadening cultural identities, auraeus solito and jeffrey jeturian have situated uniquely philippine expressions within pictures marked by brocolage, intertextuality and the blurring of genres.

roland tolentino blogs

filipino fictionist and critic roland tolentino now blogs.

roland has received palanca, cultural center of the philippines, philippines free press and manila critics' circle national book awards from as well as fulbright, hawthornden castle, st. louis poetry center as well as the all university predoctoral merit fellowships for his creative writing and research. he completed his phd at the university of southern california's film school (steven spielberg is one of their prominent graduates).

immediately after his postgrad at usc, roland returned to teach at u.p. then he took a leave to become visiting professor at osaka gaidai (osaka university of foreign studies, japan). he became an active member of the manunuri ng pelikulang pilipino, the organization of film critics behind the annual urian awards. then he became director of the u.p. film institute. then he became holder of the henry sy professorial chair in the university. then
early this year, roland became a distinguished visitor at ucla. currently, he is a visiting fellow and associate professor at the national university of singapore. he will return to teach at u.p. diliman's college of mass communication early next year.

roland's creative and critical works have been published in screen, social text, film appreciation, amerasia (ucla), asian ainema, refiguring spain, filipiniana reader, ani, diliman review, foreign relations, philippines studies, philippine-japan relations towards the 21st century and transnational asia pacific.
